Music

Music plays an important part in our school, building a sense of community and school identity as children learn to sing and play instruments together.

Children have music lessons regularly and are given opportunities to show case these in school productions, church services and assemblies.  Each week they broaden their song repertoire and singing skills through a whole school practise.

Children also have opportunities to listen to a wide range of music throughout the school day.

In EYFS we follow the EYFS curriculum/Development Matters and in Key Stage One, we follow the National Curriculum.

The National Curriculum organises the attainment targets for Music under

Performing – singing and playing instruments

Listening – to a range of music

Composing

Recording

and so our Music curriculum is planned with these strands running through each unit.

Children will learn about the inter-related dimensions or elements of music.  These are the building blocks of music and therefore run throughout our curriculum.

These are:

  • Pitch
  • Duration
  • Dynamics
  • Tempo
  • Timbre
  • Texture
  • Structure

At Ewhurst, in EYFS, children learn through the area of Expressive Arts.  In Key Stage One, children follow the Kapow scheme, where topics are studied each half term.
