History
At Ewhurst, children have a curiosity about the world in which they live and enjoy finding out about events and characters in the past. They ask perceptive questions and make links, using their ever-growing knowledge. Our school has been in the village for over a hundred years and illustrates that, whilst times have changed, some things have remained the same.
In EYFS we follow the EYFS curriculum/Development Matters and in Key Stage One, we follow the National Curriculum.
We have planned our curriculum with awareness of the following historical strands running through each area covered:
Topic Knowledge
Chronological awareness
Substantive or abstract concepts
Historical enquiry
Disciplinary concepts
Topic Knowledge: Gaining a rich knowledge of the current topic or event being studied.
Chronological Awareness: Understanding language related to chronology and beginning to build a mental timeline of the chronological order of events studied
Substantive or abstract concepts: power, civilisation, achievements and follies of mankind
Disciplinary concepts: such as similarities and differences, cause and consequence, historical significance and sources of evidence.
Historical enquiry: posing a historical question, gathering, organising and evaluating evidence, and making connections.
At Ewhurst, in EYFS, children learn through the area of understanding of the world. In Key Stage One, children follow the Kapow scheme, where three topics are studied each year.
